BOYS SOCCER

Cambridge/Salem edges Lake George in season opener

SALEM — Cambridge/Salem opened its boys varsity soccer season with a 1-0 victory over Lake George on Sept. 3, scoring the game’s lone goal late in the second half.

The Lakers controlled much of the possession early, working the ball through the midfield while looking for openings against the Cambridge/Salem defense. Cambridge/Salem repeatedly turned away those attacks, however, and neither team was able to break through during the opening 40 minutes.

Both sides generated opportunities in the first half, but the defenses and goalkeepers kept the game scoreless heading into halftime.

Lake George continued to see plenty of the ball in the second half and finished the game with 11 shots, but Cambridge/Salem kept many of those attempts away from goal. Brady Brownell, Tristan Ossont, Will Ridler and Ryan Hodgkinson helped anchor the Cambridge/Salem defense in front of goalkeeper Tyler Beadling.

The breakthrough came with about 14 minutes remaining. Alex Olson pressured the Lake George defense near the top of the penalty area, intercepted a pass intended for goalkeeper Martin Farrell and finished a low shot into the far corner to give Cambridge/Salem a 1-0 advantage.

Lake George pushed forward looking for an equalizer over the closing minutes, but Cambridge/Salem dropped back defensively and preserved the one-goal lead.

Beadling made five saves to earn the season-opening shutout for Cambridge/Salem. Farrell recorded six saves for Lake George.

Lake George held an 11-7 advantage in shots and earned seven corner kicks to Cambridge/Salem’s three, but Olson’s second-half finish proved to be the difference as Cambridge/Salem started the season with a victory.

Bolton-Warrensburg tops Cambridge-Salem, 4-1

BOLTON LANDING, NY — Bolton-Warrensburg scored three times in the first half and went on to defeat Cambridge-Salem 4-1 in boys varsity soccer action Saturday, Sept. 5.

Randy Girard opened the scoring at 11:20 off an assist from Lance Corey. Hunter Roush, assisted by Carsen Clark, made it 2-0 at 33:45 before Ben Birkholz added an unassisted goal just 25 seconds later for a 3-0 halftime advantage.

Girard struck again just 35 seconds into the second half, with Roush providing the assist, to extend the lead to 4-0.

Cambridge-Salem responded with increased pressure and scored at 63:20 when Rowan Ossont put away a loose ball in front of the net. The visitors finished with an 8-5 advantage in shots and earned 11 corner kicks to Bolton-Warrensburg’s two.

Jaden Nieves made seven saves for Bolton-Warrensburg, while Tyler Beadling recorded one for Cambridge-Salem. Nolan Thomas, Ossont, Alex Olson, Dawson Honyout and Tristan Ossont were among Cambridge-Salem’s contributors.

Cambridge-Salem shuts out Hoosick Falls, 3-0

HOOSICK FALLS — Cambridge-Salem broke open a scoreless game with three second-half goals to defeat Hoosick Falls 3-0 in nonleague boys varsity soccer action Tuesday.

Both teams generated opportunities in the opening half, but the defenses kept the game scoreless through halftime.

Alex Olson put Cambridge-Salem on the board off an assist from Landon Sullivan. Rowan Ossont followed with the second goal after a shot by Dawson Honyoust was blocked and the rebound came to Ossont. Olson later scored his second goal of the game to complete the scoring.

Tyler Beadling earned his second shutout of the season in goal for Cambridge-Salem. Richie Bartholomew recorded nine saves for Hoosick Falls.

FOOTBALL

Hoosick Falls/Tamarac rolls past Gloversville, 40-0

GLOVERSVILLE, NY — Hoosick Falls/Tamarac opened its football season with a 40-0 shutout of Gloversville on Thursday, Sept. 4, combining a strong ground game with a defense that forced three turnovers.

Hoosick Falls/Tamarac struck first when Ryan Sparks returned an interception four yards for a touchdown. The team carried a 6-0 lead into the second quarter before quarterback Owen Hart connected with Porter Driscoll for touchdown passes of 7 and 33 yards. Jake Smith converted both extra points for a 20-0 halftime advantage.

Hoosick Falls/Tamarac added three touchdowns in the third quarter. August Lee scored on a 17-yard run, Grant Glover broke free for a 75-yard touchdown and Glenn Milliman added a 6-yard scoring run.

Lee led the rushing attack with 146 yards on 16 carries, while Glover gained 89 yards on two attempts. Aiden Cavanaugh added 42 yards on four carries.

Hart completed 8 of 16 passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns. Driscoll caught two passes for 41 yards and both scores. Aiden Whalen had two receptions for 11 yards, while Sparks added a 10-yard catch and Lee had a 15-yard reception.

Hoosick Falls/Tamarac finished with 363 total yards, including 283 rushing, while holding Gloversville to 45 total yards and minus-4 yards on the ground. The defense intercepted three passes and limited Gloversville to eight first downs.

Greenwich shuts out Moriah

GREENWICH — Greenwich opened its football season with a 26-0 victory over Moriah in a game that was stopped with nine minutes remaining in the third quarter because of injuries to Moriah players.

Greenwich took the lead in the first quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Saunders. The Witches added three touchdowns in the second quarter, beginning with a 41-yard run by Clayton. Saunders then connected with Mullen for a 13-yard touchdown pass, with Saunders finding Facin for the two-point conversion.

Clayton added his second touchdown on a 42-yard run to give Greenwich a 26-0 advantage.

Clayton led the ground game with 179 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Saunders rushed five times for 21 yards and a touchdown, while Jameson had 19 yards on two carries and Dobson added 40 yards on one attempt.

Saunders completed 3 of 6 passes for 30 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Mullen caught all three completions for 30 yards and a touchdown.

Before the season, Greenwich coach Brandon Linnett said the Witches were facing a more challenging schedule and would look to their veteran players.

“Our Seniors will have to lead the way if we are going to be successful,” Linnett said.

GOLF

Stillwater tops Waterford-Halfmoon, 8-1

HALFMOON, NY — Stillwater remained unbeaten with an 8-1 golf victory over Waterford-Halfmoon on Friday at the Fairways of Halfmoon.

Daniel Degrasse led Stillwater with a 38, followed by Tye Morris with a 42, Nick Rose with a 47 and Vincent Festa with a 50.

Dylan Day paced Waterford-Halfmoon with a 43. Landon Pitcher shot a 45 and Bradley O’Connor finished with a 46.

Stillwater improved to 4-0, while Waterford-Halfmoon fell to 2-2.

Hoosick Falls edges Mechanicville, 5-4

HOOSICK FALLS — The Hoosick Falls golf team closed out its week with a 5-4 victory over Mechanicville on Friday, Sept. 4, at Hoosick Falls Country Club.

Mechanicville’s Matt Salvador earned medalist honors with an even-par 34, while Aidyn DeGraaf led the Panthers. Hoosick Falls also received rounds of 42 from Jack Shea, 43 from Spencer Tate and Zach Houghton, 44 from Colton Brust, 47 from Quinn Haynes, 58 from Memphis Hathaway and 60 from Callen Aubin.

Mechanicville’s other scores included Kolton Rinaldi, AJ Messercola and John Cady each shooting 45, Vinny Taylor recording a 46 and Brody Landy finishing with a 49.

Hoosick Falls is scheduled to face Hoosic Valley at Battenkill Country Club on Wednesday before hosting Waterford-Halfmoon on Friday.

Mechanicville bests Waterford-Halfmoon, 8-1

HALFMOON, NY — Mechanicville earned an 8-1 golf victory over Waterford-Halfmoon on Tuesday at the Fairways of Halfmoon.

Matt Salvadore earned medalist honors with a 39 for Mechanicville. Kolton Rinaldi, Brody Landy and John Cady each shot 45, while AJ Messercola finished with a 47.

Waterford-Halfmoon was led by Dylan Day, Landon Pitcher and Bradley O’Connor, who each carded a 43. Evan Cavosie added a 47.

Mechanicville improved to 4-2, while Waterford-Halfmoon fell to 2-3.

Waterford-Halfmoon tops Tamarac, 8.5-0.5

HALFMOON, NY — Waterford-Halfmoon earned an 8.5-0.5 golf victory over Tamarac on Wednesday at the Fairways of Halfmoon.

Dylan Day and Landon Pitcher shared medalist honors with rounds of 41 for the Fordians. Evan Cavosie added a 46, Bradley O’Connor shot 48 and Andrew O’Connor finished with a 52.

Troy Karz led Tamarac with a 45, followed by Clayton Weyant with a 50 and AJ Lee with a 53.

Waterford-Halfmoon improved to 2-1, while Tamarac fell to 0-3.

GIRLS SOCCER

St. Lawrence tops Salem-Cambridge in Tournament

SALEM — Salem-Cambridge fell 6-0 to St. Lawrence in varsity girls soccer action Sunday, Sept. 6, during the Hall of Fame Tournament.

St. Lawrence built a 3-0 advantage in the first half behind two goals from Avery Marcia and one from Audreyann Sweet. The Saints added three more after halftime, with Sweet scoring her second, Leah Perry finding the net and Marcia completing a hat trick.

Salem-Cambridge used two goalkeepers in the contest. Charlotte Hodgkinson recorded eight saves and Avery Gillis made 12. St. Lawrence’s goalkeeper finished with three saves.

Field hockey

Sept. 3 — Queensbury 9, Colonie 0. Rio Patch recorded a hat trick, while Sydney Yrsha scored twice. Kendall Hamm and Olivia Salone each had a goal and two assists, and Madelyn Testani and Megan Reynolds each scored. Megan Winne made three saves for the shutout. Yrsha’s two goals gave her 50 for her varsity career.

Sept. 4 — Queensbury 4, Burr and Burton Academy 3. Rio Patch and Sydney Yrsha each had two goals and an assist for Queensbury. Fiona Corbett led Burr and Burton with two goals and two assists, while Laina Bodo had a goal and an assist. Winne made 14 saves for Queensbury and Emma Anderson stopped nine for Burr and Burton.

Sept. 8 — Johnstown 3, Queensbury 0. Jenna Berju scored twice and Brynn Hartwig added a goal for Johnstown, with Hope LoDestro and Maddy Kraemer recording assists. Queensbury goalkeeper Megan Winne made a school-record 25 saves, surpassing the previous mark of 24 set by Christina Galatioto in 2012. Johnstown goalkeeper McKenna Ward made one save.

Girls tennis

Sept. 3 — Queensbury 6, South Glens Falls 1. Nicole Greenstein, Kate Trowbridge, Breck Allen, Samantha Smead and Juliette Demers swept the singles matches for Queensbury. Ludovica Bassi and Lydia Beecher added a doubles victory. South Glens Falls’ Isabella Boschert and Brianna Mallory defeated Jyllian Hoskins-Pfeiffer and Madelynn Hofmann in the other doubles match. Greenstein’s victory was her 72nd career singles win, tying her for second in Queensbury history.

Girls soccer

Sept. 2 - Queensbury 2, LaSalle 0. Julianna Percetti scored both Queensbury goals, with Addison Boecher adding an assist. Caroline Wright made seven saves for her first varsity shutout. LaSalle goalkeeper Kenadee Culver had four saves.

Sept. 5 - Queensbury 1, Northeast Clinton 0. Cameron Peck scored off an assist from Julianna Percetti. Wright made one save for the shutout as Queensbury held a 16-3 advantage in shots. Northeast Clinton goalkeeper Peyton Scott made seven saves.

Sept. 5 - Mechanicville 6, Scotia-Glenville 1. Maddie Veeder scored Scotia-Glenville’s goal and Addisyn Boniewski made 20 saves.

Sept. 5 - Waterford-Halfmoon 5, St. Lawrence 0. Rylan Charbonneau, Riley Noto, Molly Meade, Julia Malinowski and Addalynn Gagliardi each scored. Eighth-grader Ella Stoliker made three saves in her varsity goalkeeper debut to earn the shutout.

Sept. 6 - Peru 4, Queensbury 1. Reese Duprey recorded a hat trick and an assist for Peru, while Elianna Trumper added a goal. Cera Duffy scored for Queensbury off an assist from Julianna Percetti. Caroline Wright made three saves for Queensbury and Allie Rock had six for Peru.

Sept. 6 - Lake George 0, Tuckahoe 0. Lake George goalkeeper Addison Reinhold made 16 saves in the scoreless draw at the Hall of Fame Tournament. Lake George had 11 shots to Tuckahoe’s 21.

Sept. 8 - Lake George 9, Johnsburg-North Warren 1. Clara Palladino, Lauren Wildey and Piper Brown each scored twice, while Maddie Meader, Rachel Evanek and Claire Entwistle also scored. Entwistle had two assists, with Maria O’Connor and Wildey adding one each. Vanessa Donahue scored for Johnsburg-North Warren off an assist from Norah Caselli. Reinhold made two saves for Lake George, while Maeghan McKinney recorded 16 for Johnsburg-North Warren.

Sept. 4 - Queensbury 0, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 0. Queensbury goalkeeper Aiden Johnson made 10 saves for his sixth career shutout as the teams played to a scoreless draw. Dillon Morehouse, John Luthringer, Pavel Ford and Salmon DeCesare helped anchor the Queensbury defense. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake goalkeeper Tristan Vrooman made two saves.
