Mechanicville pulls away over Waterford-Halfmoon
WATERFORD — Mechanicville built a commanding first-half lead and never let up Wednesday night, cruising past Waterford-Halfmoon 67-32 in a boys varsity basketball matchup.
The Red Raiders raced out to a 50-15 advantage by halftime, setting the tone early with balanced scoring and steady defensive pressure. Sophomore Ethan Staunton led Mechanicville with 19 points, while fellow sophomore Matt Munger added 15. Junior Kolton Rinaldi also reached double figures with 10 points in the win.
Waterford-Halfmoon was led by Tristan Philo and Evan Bristol, who each finished with nine points as the Fordians worked to slow Mechanicville’s pace after the break.
With the victory, Mechanicville improved to 1-3 in league play and 2-6 overall. Waterford-Halfmoon dropped to 0-4 in the league and 2-8 on the season.
Mechanicville is scheduled to host Cambridge on Friday with tipoff set for 7 p.m.
Greenwich holds off Hoosick Falls in 63-46 home win
GREENWICH — The Greenwich boys basketball team pulled away in the fourth quarter to secure a 63-46 victory over Hoosick Falls Panthers on Friday night.
Greenwich led 16-10 after the first quarter before Hoosick Falls responded with a strong second period, outscoring the Witches 21-17 to narrow the margin at halftime. The Panthers continued to press in the third quarter, but Greenwich regained control down the stretch with a 22-point fourth quarter to close out the win.
Ethan Mullen led Greenwich Witches with 20 points, including eight two-point field goals and a three-pointer. Ryan Ingber added 16 points, while Mike Cronin finished with 12. Colin Traver and Langston Hall each contributed seven points.
Hoosick Falls was paced by Ryan Sparks, who scored 18 points and converted all four of his free throw attempts. Tate finished with 12 points, while Driscoll, Cavanaugh and Thayne each added six.
Greenwich finished the game with 21 two-point field goals, four three-pointers and went 8-for-11 from the free throw line. Hoosick Falls connected on 11 two-point shots and seven three-pointers, going 5-for-6 at the line.
Cambridge boys fall by one at Mechanicville in late rally
MECHANICVILLE — The Cambridge boys basketball team came up just short Friday night, dropping a 55–54 decision on the road to Mechanicville after nearly erasing a fourth-quarter deficit.
Mechanicville led 12–10 after the first quarter and carried a 28–29 halftime score before edging ahead 42–40 through three quarters. The Red Raiders then stretched the margin to nine points midway through the fourth quarter, but Cambridge rallied down the stretch to make it a one-possession game in the final seconds.
The comeback attempt was stopped at the buzzer when Mechanicville sophomore Ethan Staunton came up with a block on the final play to preserve the one-point win.
Staunton led all scorers with 22 points for Mechanicville, while fellow sophomore Matt Munger added 15 points. Kolton Rinaldi finished with 7 points, Ryan Gaba scored 6, and Alex Shakow chipped in 5 as the Red Raiders improved to 2–3 in the league and 3–6 overall.
Cambridge was paced by Connor Genevick and Luke MacDougall with 13 points apiece. Nathan Lord scored 9 points, Kolin Rowland added 7, Myles Mattson had 7, and Preston Peabody finished with 5 as the Indians fell to 7–4 overall.
Hoosic Valley Hawks pull away after halftime to rout Berlin-New Lebanon
HOOSICK FALLS — The Hoosic Valley Hawks used a dominant third quarter to turn a close game into a runaway Friday night, rolling to an 86–35 non-league boys basketball win over Berlin-New Lebanon.
Hoosic Valley led 21–6 after the first quarter and carried a 41–11 advantage into halftime. The Hawks then blew the game open after the break, pouring in 34 points in the third quarter to extend the lead to 75–20 before closing out the lopsided victory.
Aydin Wiley paced a balanced Hoosic Valley scoring effort with 19 points, while Austin Brown added 14. Owen Harder finished with 12 points, Eduardo Miggiano scored 11, and Carter Simpson chipped in 9. Warren Reynolds and Thomas Chetwynd each scored 7, Tyler Jones had 6, Jackson Schram added 3, and Lee finished with 2.
Berlin-New Lebanon was led by Hendricks with 10 points. Esposito scored 8, DeGraff added 6, while Mace and Lienyk finished with 4 points apiece and Yeroun scored 3.
Hoosic Valley pulls away late to top Hoosick Falls
HOOSICK FALLS — Hoosic Valley used a balanced scoring effort and a strong second half to pull away for a 71-61 win over Hoosick Falls on Tuesday night.
The Hawks led 15-9 after the first quarter and took a slim 35-31 edge into halftime before opening things up after the break. Hoosic Valley outscored the Panthers 24-18 in the second half to seal the victory.
Senior Thomas Chetwynd finished with 16 points for Hoosic Valley, while junior Lee led the way with 24 points. Carter Simpson added 18 points and Tyler Jones chipped in 12 as the Hawks spread the scoring across the lineup.
Hoosick Falls was paced by junior Ryan Sparks, who poured in a career-high 39 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in a standout performance. Sophomore Porter Driscoll added nine points for the Panthers, who stayed within striking distance until late in the game.
Greenwich Witches get lopsided win over Berlin
GREENWICH — Greenwich Witches put the game away early Tuesday night, racing out to a 34-2 first-quarter lead on the way to a 76-27 boys basketball win over Berlin Mountaineers.
Greenwich led 48-14 at the half and continued to build the advantage with a 19-point third quarter before closing out the non-competitive contest at home.
Ethan Mullen led all scorers with 20 points, converting seven two-point field goals and going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Mike Cronin added 11 points, including a pair of three-pointers, while Omar DeJesus finished with nine points. Langston Hall chipped in nine points on three three-pointers, and Max Nichols and Ryan Ingber each scored seven.
Will Weber added five points, while Colin Traver and Sam Ziehm each finished with three. Wyatt Skiff rounded out the scoring with two points as Greenwich spread minutes throughout the lineup.
Berlin was led by Hendricks, who scored 11 points on a mix of inside baskets and three-pointers. Albec and Yerdon each finished with six points, while Mace and Esposito added two apiece.
Greenwich finished the night with 22 two-point field goals, seven three-pointers, and went 11-for-16 from the free-throw line, while Berlin was limited to seven two-pointers, four threes, and just one made free throw.
