THE GIVING SHOPPE: BARGAINS AND SUPPORT IN SALEM THRIFT STORE

SALEM - Ask any bargain shopper what motivates him or her to seek out used and low-cost items, and the answer usually combines several factors. The “thrill of the hunt,” the need to find quality clothing and household goods at affordable prices, the desire to recycle more goods to keep fabrics and other materials out of the waste system: these drive shoppers to places like The Shoppe Off Broadway on the campus of the Historic Salem Courthouse. For locals, the Shoppe serves as an informal social gathering place and connects shoppers with the all-volunteer staff, most of whom were professionals in the field of education. Many shoppers, the volunteers remark, are regulars each week who check up on the latest inventory, seeking bargains in clothing, arts and crafts, jewelry, small household items, and seasonal decorations. But the Shoppe serves a larger, community-centered purpose.

“Working together our community, the Courthouse, and The Shoppe Off Broadway support activities that enrich the lives of our children-- Activities where learning, connection, and support thrive.  I am so pleased to have the opportunity to be a volunteer at the Shoppe Off Broadway,” remarks volunteer Ann Dunnigan, who also is the Chair of the Salem School Board.  She notes that individuals or programs can apply to the Shoppe for funds when they have particular youth-driven needs:

“When the Grant Program began, it was designed to support activities and opportunities that provided for active participation of students.  Especially opportunities, activities, and experiences that might not otherwise be available without this financial support.  Through the COVID years we also considered requests that delivered a specific benefit to the students.

In the third year of the pandemic, we used all three of these criteria.  Many field trips, visiting lecturers, materials for after school activities and programs, the Backpack Program, training for students, flexible seating as well as standing desks are just a few of the comprehensive list of grant requests that have been supported by the Shoppe.”

The relationship with the Courthouse is a symbiotic one, as the Shoppe also directly enhances the activities that take place on the Courthouse campus. A new program, Girls on the Run, was supported through a generous grant that allowed young women to engage in a mentored experience of preparing for racing while learning such skills as self-esteem, empowerment, and goal-setting. A veteran program, Lunch, Learn, &  Play, serves 175 school-aged youth each summer, providing free enrichment, meals, and employment for high school students. LLP operates mostly out of doors, so it was a particularly generous donation when the Shoppe voted to give an additional $10,000 to their existing $10,000 gift last summer to provide sturdy new tents to house summer activities. Those tents also served as venues for Courthouse fundraising events such as the Al Fresco Dinner and the annual Beer & Brats festival.

Keeping the Shoppe running is “lots of work but so well worth it,” says veteran Sue Keyes, who marks the Shoppe’s opening as Memorial Day, 2004. Lonnie Rasmussen enjoys her time volunteering: “As a cashier at The Shoppe Off Broadway, I find that greeting our customers and ringing up their great finds is very rewarding. Our customers are happy and appreciative of the items we offer at such reasonable prices. It is fun to see all these treasures go through the Shoppe and find a new home.  The cashiers at the Shoppe agree that the number of customers we serve has increased as we have become more widely known in Salem and the surrounding towns and even into Vermont. We attribute this to increased use of social media, word of mouth, and the quality of items we sell.”

Since its inception, the Shoppe has given back to the community over $370,000! Those who would like to support the Shoppe in its mission can do so by shopping (hours are Wednesday, Thursday, and Fridays 10-12 and the first and 3rd Saturdays of each month, from ten to noon) or donating clean items in good condition to the Shoppe during hours that it is open.
