Greenwich Rallies Late to Knock Off Salem-Cambridge
GREENWICH — A pair of big innings lifted Greenwich to a 6-1 win over Salem-Cambridge in varsity baseball action Monday afternoon, with the Witches using timely hits and strong pitching to open their season on a high note.
After three scoreless frames, Salem-Cambridge scratched across the game’s first run in the top of the fourth. But Greenwich responded with two runs in the fifth and a four-run burst in the sixth to take control and put the game out of reach.
Cooper Skiff earned the win for Greenwich, scattering four hits over five innings while allowing just one unearned run and striking out four. Joey Skiff came on in relief and was lights out, striking out six over two hitless innings to earn the save.
Greenwich’s offense came alive in the late innings, highlighted by extra-base power from Joey Skiff, Ryan Ingber, and Owen Brockway. Skiff ripped two doubles and drove in a pair of runs, while Ingber and Brockway each added a double and two RBI to fuel the surge.
Ethan Dunham drove in the lone run for Salem-Cambridge, finishing 1-for-3 at the plate. Chase Baylor also went 1-for-3, reaching base twice and taking a hit-by-pitch. Salem-Cambridge pitchers kept it close early—Stephen Yakubec struck out five in two hitless innings and James Beagle allowed just one hit while fanning three across two innings. Luke Yakubec was charged with four runs—two earned—in the sixth.
The win moves Greenwich to 1-0 overall and 0-0 in league play. Salem-Cambridge falls to 0-1.
Hoosick Falls Falls Just Short in Season Opener
MECHANICVILLE — The Hoosick Falls baseball team came up just short in a high-scoring season opener on the road, falling 11-9 to Mechanicville in a game that had no shortage of offense.
Sophomore Eli Brown led the way at the plate for the Panthers, going a perfect 4-for-4 with four singles. Freshman Porter Driscoll made a strong debut, notching a single, a double, and driving in three runs. Juniors Max Landry and Neal Turner also chipped in — Landry with two singles and an RBI, and Turner delivering a clutch two-run pinch-hit single.
Despite the loss, Hoosick Falls showed plenty of promise at the plate and will look to build on the momentum as they settle into the season.
Softball
Greenwich Softball Dominates Cambridge in Season Opener
The Greenwich varsity softball team kicked off their season in commanding fashion on Friday, April 4, with a dominant 10-0 victory over Cambridge.
Pitcher Keeley Vooris was untouchable on the mound, striking out 15 batters, allowing just two hits, and not issuing a single walk. Her flawless performance set the tone for the Witches as they cruised to victory.
Greenwich's offense was just as impressive, scattering 14 hits throughout the game. Mya Saunders led the charge, going 3-for-4 at the plate, including a home run that electrified the team. Brooke Kuzmich matched Saunders with a 3-for-4 performance of her own, hitting three singles to keep the lineup moving.
Cambridge struggled to get their offense going against Vooris. Daisy Bassett and Isabel Darfler each managed a single, but that was the extent of Cambridge's hits for the game. Pitcher Olivia Keller took the loss for Cambridge.
With the win, Greenwich starts the season 1-0, while Cambridge falls to 0-1. The Witches look to keep their momentum rolling as they continue their early-season slate.
Cambridge Rallies Late to Top Hoosic Valley 7-6
CAMBRIDGE — The Cambridge varsity softball team opened its season with a thrilling 7-6 win over Hoosic Valley on Monday, using a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh to cap a come-from-behind victory under chilly spring skies.
Cambridge jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first inning, but Hoosic Valley chipped away over the next few frames, tying the game at six by the fifth. The score held steady into the bottom of the seventh, when senior Megan Day stepped to the plate and delivered a clutch sacrifice fly to bring home the winning run and seal the walk-off victory.
Senior Olivia Keller locked down the win in relief, tossing three shutout innings and striking out five without issuing a walk. Olivia Tyrer got the start in the circle, going four innings and battling through some tough spots with four strikeouts and five walks.
Cambridge’s lineup showed solid depth with contributions throughout. Abby Fazioli drove in two runs and scored once, while Isabel Darfler added a pair of RBIs of her own. Megan Day delivered a clutch sacrifice fly, and Brigid Toleman chipped in with two hits. Natalie Wood was a spark plug on the bases, swiping two bags and scoring a run. Hoosick Falls Softball Tops Mechanicville with 9-1 Win
MECHANICVILLE, — Hoosick Falls varsity softball came out swinging on Friday, cruising to a 9-1 victory over Mechanicville behind dominant pitching and a powerful day at the plate.
Kennedy Boisvert was lights-out in the circle, tossing a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts and no earned runs. The Panthers gave her plenty of support, highlighted by a home run and three RBIs from Avery McMahon.
Erin Conety had a big day as well, collecting three singles, a double, and an RBI. Zoe James, Taegyn Hart, and Mary Walker each added a double, keeping the offense rolling from top to bottom.
Girls Lacrosse
Wildcats Roar Past Emma Willard, 14-10
The Tamarac/Hoosick Falls Wildcats girls' varsity lacrosse team secured a solid 14-10 victory over Emma Willard on April 7, 2025.
Tatum Hickey put on a scoring clinic, netting 7 goals and adding an assist to lead the Wildcats' offense. Caroline Murphy wasn't far behind, racking up 6 goals and dishing out an assist. Grace Eastman also chipped in with a goal to round out the scoring.
The Wildcats' unselfish play shone through, with assists coming from Payton Dailey, Elizabeth DaRosa, Murphy, and Hickey. Lucy Hayes anchored the defense with a stellar performance in goal, making 9 key saves to help secure the win.
Emma Willard's attack was led by Cricket Berkman, who scored 5 times, while Sally Hill added 3 goals. Julia G. and Maela N. each scored once, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Wildcats' relentless offense.
Wildcats Dominate Johnstown with 20-6 Victory
JOHNSTOWN - The Hoosick Falls/Tamarac girls varsity lacrosse team hit the road and brought the heat Wednesday afternoon, rolling past Johnstown in a commanding 20-6 win.
Tatum Hickey led the charge with a standout performance, notching eight goals and five assists to pace the Wildcats’ explosive offense. Caroline Murphy added five goals of her own for Tamarac, while Elizabeth DaRosa chipped in four goals and two assists to keep the pressure on the Johnstown defense.
Grace Eastman contributed a goal and two assists, and both Emma Wilwol and Teresa Kane got on the board with one goal apiece.
In goal, Lucy Hayes turned in a stellar performance with 12 saves, keeping Johnstown’s offense from gaining any momentum.
Greenwich-Cambridge Girls Lacrosse Tops Emma Willard
GREENWICH - Greenwich-Cambridge lacrosse, in their first season combined - got off to a strong start and never looked back Tuesday night, taking down Emma Willard 9-3 under the lights at home.
Brooke Deminenko had a standout performance, scoring five goals to lead the Witches’ offense. Morgan Foster added two goals, while Quinn Sheeshan and Isabelle Miller each chipped in one to round out the scoring. In goal, Reese Hunt made six saves to keep the Jesters at bay.
G-C led 4-2 at the half and turned up the pressure in the second, outscoring Emma Willard 5-1 after the break.
Emma Willard’s goals came from Ellie Schabses, Sally Hill, and Cricket Berkman, each netting one in the effort.
The win improves Greenwich-Cambridge to 5-0 in league play and 6-1 overall on the season.
