Valley Falls Seeks Comments on Proposed Mill Project

VALLEY FALLS — The Village of Valley Falls is seeking public comment on a draft application for $4 million in federal funding to clean up and demolish the former Thompson Mill at 273 Poplar Street.

The village intends to apply for an Environmental Protection Agency Brownfields Cleanup Grant to address hazardous materials at the long-vacant, fire-damaged textile mill site along the Hoosic River. If awarded, the funding would allow for demolition of the condemned structure and environmental remediation, removing safety hazards and preparing the property for future reuse.

The cleanup project is a key part of the village’s long-term effort to reclaim its riverfront and reduce blight at one of the community’s most prominent sites. Village officials have indicated the eventual goal is to make the property safe for public use following remediation, consistent with broader revitalization planning efforts.

The draft grant application and a draft Analysis of Brownfield Cleanup Alternatives are available for public review at the Valley Falls Community Hall, the Valley Falls Free Library during regular hours, or online at historicvalleyfalls.com. Written comments must be received by 5 p.m. on Jan. 20 and may be submitted by mail to the Thompson Mill Project Manager, P.O. Box 157, Valley Falls, NY 12185, or by email to vfthompsonmillprojectmanager@gmail.com

You can find more information including all of the plan documents at www.historicvalleyfalls.com.
